The 8th Air Force was the most potent arm of American air power during WW2, tasked with the strategic bombing campaign against Germany. Flying B-17 and B-24 heavy bombers with P-51 Mustang fighter escorts, the "Mighty Eighth" swept the vaunted Luftwaffe from the skies in epic air battles over Occupied Europe.
Many P-51 fighter pilots chose the British 1941 Pattern sheepskin flight boots, as their warm fleece interiors and high tops set them apart from any US models. This pair of US Army AAF WW2 8TH AIR FORCE P-51 MUSTANG PILOT BRITISH SHEEPSKIN FLIGHT BOOTS are in very good condition, with the left boot somewhat darker than the right, the left boot zipper and track crafted of brass, while the right's are constructed of metal, some scattered darkening around the upper interiors, some scattered small holes in the top edge of each interior, some curling to the end of each ankle strap, a spot of dark soiling at the inner middle left ankle strap, some scattered brownish soiling to the soles, some scattered missing stitching along the upper right sole, and with some scattered darkening, dusting, and age wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the boots are in fine shape, with no other damage to the soft brown sheepskin leather construction. Most interestingly, they boast thick, warm sheepskin fleece interiors, sport fully functional "W" stamped metal and brass front zippers, and carry fully intact brown leather ankle straps. They are "broad arrow" marked at each upper back tongue, bear "ITSHIDE / MADE IN ENGLAND" black composition soles, and are a fine example of very rare, original US Army AAF WW2 8TH AIR FORCE P-51 MUSTANG PILOT BRITISH SHEEPSKIN FLIGHT BOOTS. MARINE CORPS" embossed bronze "donut buttons throughout.
Measurements: The boots measure 11 5/8" from heel to toe along the sole, 3 13/16" across the sole at their widest point, 15" from the bottom back heel to the top calf, and 22.5" around the top calf.
