Henry Harley''Hap'' Arnold [1886 1950] who served from 1907 until his death in 1950, was an American general, early bird pilot who held the ranks of General of the Army and later, General of the Air Force. He was also an aviation pioneer who was taught to fly by the Wright Brothers and was one of the first military pilots worldwide and one of the first three rated pilots in the United States Air Force. He is also the only officer to hold a five-star rank in two different U. During World War I, he was a protege of General Billy Mitchell and supervised the expansion of the Air Service. During World War II, he supervised the expansion of an organization of 20,000 men and a few hundred aircraft into the largest and most powerful air force in the world.
