Eddie Bauer pioneered the development of the first'down jackets' registering the original patent in 1940 and being awarded a governmental contract to produce a down-insulated flight suit for the Air Force in 1942 along with a selected few manufacturers(Reed, Ben Green Holtz). Though produced at the same time as the alpaca-lined B-11 the down-insulated B-9 was deemed too expensive to continue producing and the USAF opted to cease any further contracts making originals pretty rare.
