Elgin A-11 WWII Vintage US Army Air Force Military Pilots Watch 1940s Era

  

My father, who flew B-25 Mitchells in World War II, wore this awesome Elgin A-11 pilots watch. This is a true war watch.

The B-25 Mitchell light bomber was instrumental in winning the war in the Pacific. It was the aircraft that Lieutenant Colonel James "Jimmy" Doolittle used to raid Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The A-11 model has been called the watch that won the war, because it was issued to so many different allied forces that the allowed coordination of attack, due to the hacking feature. It allowed precise timing of troop movements and air attack. The rugged nature and accurate time keeping of the A-11 was also key to aircraft navigation in the time before GPS, it was a critical aircraft instrument the could mean the difference between life and death of the pilot. This watch survived the war, but my care taking days of it have come to end and I do not have anyone who will appreciate it the way it needs to be appreciated. This could be a true museum piece.

The watch runs, but is a little slow (about five minutes in twenty-four hours) as you would expect from something seventy-five years old. Im sure it could could be brought back to speed with a service.

The crystal is scratched, but in good shape. The case is battle scarred and deserves a purple heart. The band is brand new-old-stock and is of the original type issued with the watch in the 1940s.
